Pandemic Pastimes: How Hobbies Help Us Deal with Anxiety

Covid provided many of us with more time on our hands than we knew what to do with. We went from not having enough hours in our day to finding something to do to make the time go faster.

The time factor was enough to make most people look for new pastimes and hobbies. They offer the additional advantage of helping to relieve anxiety, something many people have experienced during this pandemic. Here are some reasons that hobbies can get you through a stressful time:

Distraction

Many people have found that a hobby takes their minds off the frightening realities of the pandemic. Some discovered the joy of playing games at an online casino, spending a few hours playing themed slots or traditional table games like blackjack, poker, and roulette.

Since it is not always possible to escape the four walls of your home, getting away virtually is a great way to get out without going out. Taking a little time for yourself and find an online activity you enjoy is something you deserve.

Immersion

Other hobbies require such intense focus and concentration that they take your mind right off the pandemic and its associated stresses. The world is seeing a return to old-fashioned crafts that were becoming a dying art, including knitting, crochet, and embroidery.

Following a pattern requires attention and leaves little room to think about anything else. Some people have turned these pastimes into new business opportunities, selling the work online to earn extra money. This additional income is welcome in most households facing challenging economic circumstances.

Happiness

A hobby that you enjoy releases serotonin, the feel-good hormone, in your brain. This neurotransmitter is responsible for a sense of well-being and could combat anxiety. A hobby that makes you happy helps you remain centered and calm.

Some people returned to hobbies they pursued in previous years, while others opted to try something completely new. It might take some exploring, but there is a hobby out there for everyone that will keep you feeling relaxed. Be flexible and willing to try new things in your quest to find the perfect hobby. Not all hobbies cost a fortune, making it cost-effective to experiment until you find something enjoyable.

Learning

Some hobbies require you to learn new things, thereby expanding your horizons. Whether you are watching the best Netflix series or learning a new language, keeping your brain active by acquiring new knowledge is ideal for combatting anxiety.

You might also enjoy teaching other people about your hobby. This might not be an in-person option during the pandemic. You can put together some video tutorials teaching others to engage in your hobby.

While I’ve always loved both jobs and never wanted to let either of them go, I finally made a change in my life. Read More…
