7 tips for caring for and protecting your engagement ring

Your engagement ring is a valuable piece of jewellery, regardless of its carat weight, style, or form, and it is likely very significant to you. As a result, you’ll want to take proper care of it to preserve its durability and maintain its appearance for many years to come. Given that you’ll be wearing this item virtually every day, you’ll want to take precautions to maintain it well-kept and secure.

Experts GS Diamonds have compiled 7 tips for caring for rings

Clean your ring at least once a quarter

It’s important to keep your ring clean so that it retains its lustre, but it’s easy to forget to do so regularly. To keep your diamond free of oil and residue, do this at least four times a year. Fill a small, shallow dish halfway with lukewarm water and one drop of moderate dish detergent to accomplish this. Allow at least 10 minutes for your ring to soak in the solution. Then, carefully scrub it clean with a soft brush, being sure to brush every inch of your ring, including the sides and back. After that, rinse the ring in clean water to remove the soap. To prevent water blemishes on your diamond, dry your ring with a lint-free towel. Your ring will be very stunning after the treatment is finished!

Examine your ring regularly

Because engagement rings are subjected to so much wear, it’s a good idea to get them checked up once a year. Bring your ring to a local jeweller for inspection. They’ll look for loose stones, damage, or cracks, among other things. They’ll also check the prongs’ security.

Take Care of the Environment

Your engagement ring’s metal setting is another thing that has to be looked after regularly. Because your ring is worn so often, it’s natural for the metal to develop scratches over time. To keep your ring looking smooth, clean it with a polishing cloth every time you clean it, and take it to a jeweller if that doesn’t work. A jeweller can restore the metal to make it seem new again!

Before resizing, consider your options

It might be tempting to get your ring adjusted right away if you believe it is too loose or too tight for your liking. However, given the size of your fingers vary with the time of day, as temperatures increase and fall, as your weight fluctuates, and even as you travel to other areas, you’ll want to consider this. Resizing your band needlessly is not only pricey, but it is also bad for the ring itself, so think twice before doing so.

When Should You Not Wear Your Ring?

Although engagement rings are supposed to be worn every day, it doesn’t mean you should. There are occasions when it’s advisable to remove your ring for the sake of your ring’s safety, to safeguard both the stones and the metal. Remove your ring when bathing, working out, or gardening, for example. When swimming or at the beach, remove your ring as well. You should also take off your ring when sleeping to prevent scratching your face and since our fingers tend to expand as we sleep.

Because you won’t be wearing your ring all of the time, you’ll want to keep it properly at home. To prevent misplacing your ring, keep ring dishes at the kitchen and bathroom sinks, as well as on your nightstand. Having a regular, secure location to put your ring can help you prevent a panic attack when this priceless memory is nowhere to be found.

Use Topical Products With Caution

Certain topical treatments might put your diamond ring’s long-term health at risk. Chemicals, scents, and alcohols often found in lotions and perfumes may be harmful to jewellery. Always remove your ring before using them since they will dull the stone and make a diamond hazy.

Household cleaning products might also be harmful to your ring’s health. Because the harsh chemicals in these treatments have the potential to damage or harm your ring, it’s crucial to remove them before completing home activities.

Keep in mind that diamonds aren’t indestructible

Diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring gemstones, but it doesn’t make them indestructible. If you’re about to do something heavy-duty where your ring could be put through its paces, always take it off. If your ring is ever hit, get it examined by a jeweller to see if there are any loose stones or broken prongs. When it comes to diamonds, it’s best to be cautious than sorry since they may be expensive to replace and often have personal importance.

Taking proper care of your engagement ring will keep it dazzlingly gorgeous and offer you peace of mind, so follow these suggestions to maintain it in great shape!
