Here are some of the best foods for naturally detoxifying your digestive system.

1. Apples

With plenty of fiber and vitamins, apples are a great cleanser. Tired of plain, raw apple slices. Core and apple and cut it in half. Sprinkle with a little cinnamon or apple pie spice. Add some sweetener, maple syrup or honey. Bake at 350F for about 20 to 30 minutes until the apple is tender.

3. Beets

4. Cabbage

Cabbage is another great liver cleanser. If you’re not a fan of raw cabbage, slice it thin and sauté it with an onion or shallot in a little olive oil. Balance out the flavor with some slices of apple or pears.

5. Cranberries

Although it can be difficult to find fresh cranberries outside of the holiday season, you may be able to find them in the freezer section. Make a simple compote of cranberries using your favorite sweetener and a little orange zest. Use it on pancakes or in your oatmeal.

6. Grapefruit

Most of the citrus fruits are great natural detoxes, but grapefruit also has antiviral compounds to help break down viruses. Include grapefruit segments in a fruit salad for a nice change of pace.

7. Green Leafy Vegetables

Kale, spinach and other dark leafy greens have a lot of antioxidants and natural cleansers that keep you healthy. Wilt spinach into your scrambled eggs. Make a kale smoothie with blueberries and apples.

8. Beans and Legumes

Chickpeas, lentils, navy beans and pinto beans are loaded with fiber, which also keeps your digestive system cleansed. Marinated bean salad, just your favorite type of bean with a little olive oil, fresh herbs, chopped shallot and garlic and a squeeze of lemon juice, is easy to whip up for lunch with a slice of whole grain toast.

9. Garlic

Garlic is great when you’re stopped up and find it hard to breathe. Use fresh garlic to help open up your sinuses. Some recommend raw garlic for a sore throat, but we like to make a gremolata with chopped parsley and lemon zest and serve it on chicken or fish.

10. Celery

Celery and celery seeds can help your body detoxify from cancer cells. Instead of raw celery, make a soup out of celery stalks.
