4 Tips For Encouraging Your Children To Sleep
Sleep is an important part of daily life regardless of what your age is. In order to stay healthy, it’s critical that you get a certain amount of rest every single night. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case, particularly with children who have issues going to and staying asleep. Bedtime can be a struggle for sleepy parents anxious to make their children get the rest that they need.
Bedtime doesn’t have to be a struggle, however. By applying the right tips, and being consistent, then you can encourage a healthy bedtime routine for your family. Take a look at some of the best tips for encouraging your children to sleep.
Be Consistent
One of the most common challenges that parents have with their children at bedtime is getting them to stay in their own bed. It’s not uncommon for them to reject their own room and want to sleep in your bedroom where they feel safe. However, sleep experts do not recommend letting your children do this.
Even though you may think that it’s only a one time occasion, your kids won’t. Children will have a difficult time accepting “no” as an answer the next time they ask to crawl in bed with you.
In order to encourage them to sleep in their own bed, you must remain consistent about making them sleep there. Don’t make exceptions if you expect them to stick to the rules the next time you put them to sleep!
Ease Their Fears
If your children are having trouble going to sleep because they are afraid of the dark, it helps to ease their fears by making their environment less frightening. Many parents find great success with setting up nightlights or keeping the door cracked open, so they don’t feel far away from you.
Try to identify specifically what it is that they are afraid of, and you’ll have a much better chance of easing their worries.
Start a Routine
Children thrive off of a routine. Creating a routine that you repeat every single night is the best way to make them feel safe. Not only will they feel reassured, but their bodies will start to recognize the sleep cues. They’ll know that after certain rituals are completed, that it’s time to start getting sleepy.
Your routine can consist of anything from bath time to reading a story. It all depends on what kind of routine works for your family.
Avoid Screens
Even though many parents feel it’s harmless to let their children watch the television or play on the tablet before bedtime, the lights from the screens may be stimulating their brains. Most sleep experts recommend avoiding screens at least two hours before bedtime in order to encourage them to fall asleep faster.
