The Most Common Causes for a Blocked Shower Drain

If the water is going down slowly while you’re taking a shower, you might have a blocked shower drain. This is a common problem, and here are some of the most typical causes for this problem:

1. Hair

It’s no surprise that a lot of hair can accumulate in the drain over time, given how often we use our showers. If you mix this with soap and shampoo, it will only make matters worse and increase the chances of clogging.

The best way to get rid of hair in your shower drain is by using a hair unblocker. These tools are designed to break up hair and wash it down the drain so your shower will flow smoothly again.

2. Sediment build-up

Over time, a shower drain will accumulate a layer of sediment in the bottom. This is particularly true if you have hard water coming from your pipes.

To clear out the sediments, you can place a clothes hanger or other long wire down the drain and push it around in a circular motion. This will help break up and move the sediment allowing water to pass through more easily.

3. Debris from your drain cover

If you have a mesh drain cover in your shower, it’s essential to clean it regularly. This will help prevent clogs and other issues, preventing debris from getting stuck inside the drain.

The best way to clean a mesh drain cover is by taking it off the drain and washing it in your sink or bathtub. You can also use a scrub brush to clean any gunk stuck inside the holes.

4. Soap residue

If you have a lot of soap residue in your shower drain, it can easily clog up the pipes. This is why cleaning down the drain and around your shower regularly is essential.

If you want to prevent soap from building up, you can also invest in a de-scaler. This will help keep your shower drain running smoothly and prevent clogs from forming.

Something else to note about soap residue is that it can also attract bugs and pests to your shower. Again, you definitely want to avoid this, so make sure you keep the drain clean and clear of any soap build-up.

5. Small objects

If you have small children and pets, it’s common for small toys and other items to end up in the shower drain. This can easily clog up the pipes and make it difficult for water to pass through.

One way to prevent this is by putting a safety cover over the drain. These are usually inexpensive and can be found at your local home improvement store.

6. Tree roots

You probably never thought a tree root could clog up your shower drain, but this is a common issue for many homeowners. It seems that trees love to grow right up to the edge of your pipes and will eventually find a way inside.

Unfortunately, this can cause blockages that prevent your water from flowing properly. If you have a tree root problem in your home, it’s best to get professional help immediately. A plumber can inspect your pipes and ensure they’re in good condition.

7. Rust

If you have a lot of rust in your pipes, this can also clog up the drain and cause blockages. It’s essential to inspect your pipes regularly, so you can catch any issues before they become too problematic.

If rust is the issue, you may need to replace the pipes in your home. This can be a time-consuming and expensive process, but it’s something you’ll have to do eventually if you want to keep your shower running smoothly.

You’ll never think of a slow shower drain the same way again

Now you know how to deal with a blocked shower drain if you’re experiencing this issue. Remember, the key is staying on top of things and taking action immediately.

You must always clean your drains and look for signs of clogs or other blockages. These problems can quickly get out of control, so taking care of them immediately is essential.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to enjoy a fully functional shower for many years to come.
