Before you get braces your orthodontist will probably tell you that there are some types of food that you should avoid. It is important that you take their advice seriously, and actually stick to it.
But what types of food should be avoided? To be honest there are several of them.
Foods That Can Damage Your Braces
The main type of food that you want to avoid completely while you’re wearing braces is anything that could damage them. The wires, brackets and rubber bands on braces are actually quite sensitive and can easily get damaged. If they are damaged, it will make the braces less effective – and you may have to wear them for longer.
In general the foods that you need to be most wary of are any that are too hard or crunchy. On top of that it may be a good idea to avoid foods that are chewy too.
Some of the specific foods that you may want to avoid are ice, gum, hard candy, hard rolls, popcorn, pretzels, and so on.
Foods That Are Bad For Your Teeth
While you’re wearing braces it is important that you take good care of your teeth. If you end up with cavities or gum disease, you may need to remove the braces to have it dealt with – which is not what you want.
That is why as far as possible you should stay away from any foods that are bad for your teeth. Always remember that sugar increases the risk of cavities dramatically, and stay away from any food that is too sweet or sticky.
Foods That May Irritate Your Mouth
When you first get braces, you may want to stay away from any food that could irritate your mouth – at least for the first few days. Initially your teeth and gums are going to be very sensitive, and you don’t want to eat any food that may acerbate them.
Some of the types of food that may cause irritation include any food that is spicy, citrus, or very hot or cold. After your teeth and gums are used to having braces you don’t need to worry about things too much.
The exception is if you feel sore after your braces are tightened, or if the braces injure your mouth in any way. If that is the case, you may want to steer clear of foods that are irritants once more – until you feel a bit better.
In addition to avoiding these foods, you may want to make it a point to cut up your food into smaller pieces so that they are easier to deal with. If you do you won’t need to use as much force to chew them – which is good for your braces.
