People often wonder how long they will need to wear braces for – but unfortunately there is no easy answer to that. The fact of the matter is that braces work slowly, and are designed to gradually straighten and realign your teeth over time.
While the amount of time it takes before you can take your braces off will vary – there are ways to make sure that it is as soon as possible.
Get the Right Type of Braces
If you want to get your braces off more quickly, you need to make sure that you choose the right type of braces to begin with. Some types of braces may be less visible, but they may not be as effective as the conventional metal braces.
Ideally you should talk to your orthodontist about your options. Be sure to ask them specifically if getting Invisalign Bristol or other types of braces will affect the duration hat you need to wear them.
Don’t Skip Any Appointments
Skipping appointments is a big mistake if you’re wearing braces. During the appointments, your orthodontist will tighten your braces – so if you skip them, your braces won’t be as effective.
Although you may be busy, or worried that braces may hurt when tightened – there is really no excuse. Every appointment that you skip or delay will extend the amount of time that you need to spend in braces.
Avoid Damage to the Braces
As far as possible you should try to avoid damaging your braces in any way. In particular you should:
- Follow food restrictions and avoid foods that are too hard or chewy.
- Do not brush or floss too vigorously.
- Avoid habitually chewing anything other than food.
- Never play or fiddle with your braces.
If for any reason your braces are damaged, be sure to immediately book an appointment with your orthodontist. The longer you wait before getting them fixed, the more time it will take.
Take Care of Your Oral Hygiene
The last thing that you want is to end up with other dental issues while you’re wearing braces. Getting cavities, gum disease or other problems will be a major setback.
Since that is the case it should be easy to see why it is extremely important that you take good care of your oral hygiene while in braces. Be sure to brush thoroughly (and regularly) as well as floss frequently.
Keep in mind that it is easy for food to get stuck in your braces, and it may require you to take additional care. If you have any difficulty you should consult your dentist.
All said and done there are many factors that will influence the length of time that you need to wear braces – and you won’t be able to do much about most of them. However by taking the steps listed above you’ll be able to minimize the duration, fix your smile more quickly, and get the braces off a whole lot sooner.
